In 1978, Peoples Temple founder Jim Jones leads hundreds of his followers in a mass murder-suicide. It happened at their agricultural commune in a remote part of the South American nation of Guyana. Drug Addiction / Substance Abuse

Use of Narcotics during the loneliness increases the chances of suicide. Most of the suicides are under the influence of sleeping pills or other types of intoxication while committing suicide. Many people use drugs to escape painful feelings of depression and hopelessness of their current life situation. Addicted to drugs or alcohol may provide some short-term relief from the pain they feel. But over the long term, drug use tends to alter brain functioning and neurotransmitters. One study found that in a country where alcohol use is more, the rate of suicide is highest.

With a poor economy, many people lose their jobs and look for new work, but since the competition is fierce, landing a new job can be difficult. In many cases unemployed makes people feel depressed due to lack of regular income.

Suicide is an illegal act in India. Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code, says that, whoever attempts to commit suicide and does any act towards the commission of such an offence, shall be punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year.

However, upon considering the recommendations of the Law Commission, the Government of India introduced Mental Healthcare Bill and the same was passed in the Rajya Sabha on August 8, 2016. Bill seeks to provide better health care facilities for those people who are suffering from mental illnesses. Bill also seeks to decriminalize the offence of Attempt to SuicideBy virtue of Section 124 of the Mental Healthcare Bill, notwithstanding anything contained in section 309 of the Indian Penal Code, any person who attempts to commit suicide shall be presumed, unless proved otherwise, to be suffering from mental illness at the time of attempting suicide and shall not be liable to punishment under the said section.
