Raghuram Rajan appointed as External Advisor to International Monetary Fund

Raghuram Rajan, Former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI),  appointed in IMF. He becomes a member of the External Advisory Group of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He appointed as an advisor to help the global economy to come on track after coronavirus pandemic. IMF MD Kristalina Georgieva held a discussion with these new advisors on Friday. The advisors will give their opinion to the IMF chief on the changes and policy issues. This will include steps that need to take due to the crisis caused by the coronavirus epidemic.

Apart from Rajan, more advisors joined the group including Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Also Professor Christine Forbes from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Former Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Former Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Lord Mark Maloka Brown.

Let me tell you that Rajan has been the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for three years till September 2016. He is currently a professor at the University of Chicago. On the appointment of Rajan and other advisors, IMF MD Georgieva said. Its member countries were facing a rapidly changing world and complex policy issues.

Georgieva also said that to serve the IMF members well in these contexts, we need a quality opinion. The IMF internal external sources will suggest needful. I am glad that experts from the market and private sector have agreed to work in this direction.

Before IMF appointment Rajan has expressed his desire to help India in the corona crisis. Talking to a private TV channel, Rajan said that if anyone urges to help. He will extend support in deal with the recession caused by a coronavirus. He said that due to this epidemic the world is definitely going towards the great depression. Its stagnation will depend on the steps to take to prevent the recurrence of this epidemic.

Need to work on plans after lockdown to deal with the economic crisis: Raghuram Rajan

Recently, Rajan suggested in a blog that now a plan required after the lockdown affect. And what will happen if the effect of the virus does not end? It will be difficult for the country to keep a complete lockdown for long.

He also said we should think about starting some activities in areas with low infection. At the same time, Rajan suggested to reach the poor through direct benefit transfer. He suggested to help small and medium enterprises.
